Talking to my finger

Created on: 2026-08-27

I have this fantasy of me walking outside, thinking, doing all my work without a screen. Its a fantasy because I'm quite addicted to screens, and because I haven't found the way to do most of my work without one.

Some time ago, during the dark ages when I was an apple user, I used to go on walks only with my apple watch and take notes on it. I remember one particular day when I was in Atlanta, and I spend a long time walking the park just dictating ideas into the watch.

After leaving apple, I had a hard time finding a replacement for it. I thought about buying a standalone mini recorder, but the idea never fully convinced me. I toyed with building my own watch, and that is still somewhat of work in progress, but has yet to materialize.

Earlier this year, I saw an ad/announcement for the Index 01. It is a ring with a single button that can record up to 12 hours of voice. It can hold 5 minutes of recordings without connecting to a phone, so I can take it with me on walks and simply talk to my finger to remember whatever it is that I'm thinking of. It is made by Pebble, and it is making me consider getting a Pebble watch, although I probably won't in the end.

Back to the ring: recording quality is quite good, transcriptions on the pebble up are also quite good (even for Spanish), and I managed to install it and getting it working on e/OS. The contentious point about the ring is that its not rechargeable. After 12 hours of recording (hopefully 2 years, you need to recycle it).
